Respironics UltraFill home oxygen system Review – first look at a game changer!

In: Home Oxygen Filling Systems

7 May 2010

Having hands on experience with home oxygen filling systems like the Chad Total O2 or the Invacare Homefill Oxygen System in patient home environments, we were well up to speed to evaluate and critique the Ultrafill Home Oxygen System from Phillips Respironics.  Respironics had the advantage of entering the game after the pioneers in home oxygen filling systems had taken most of the slings and arrows.  As is the case with any late entry into the market, Respironics was able to look start their home oxygen filling system in step with current innovation, but, will the Ultrafill be able to overcome the market dominance of Invacare?  We think yes!

Respironics Ultra FillUltraFill advancements in  home oxygen system is not the combination of a stationary oxygen concentrator and a filling station, Respironics Ultrafill’s advancement is the use of  high-capacity 3,000 PSI cylinders to meet the needs highly active oxygen patients and oxygen patients who simply want autonomy from their providers.

What are the goals of a home oxygen filling system?  Increased patient activity and increased patient autonomy.  Any time you can keep the oxygen provider away is a good thing, setting up reoccurring appointments with your provider to replace your compressed gas cylinders or even worse having your liquid oxygen system refilled every two weeks is more than a drag.  The home oxygen filling system allowed an oxygen user an unlimited supply of portable oxygen with the better duration than the best Helios liquid oxygen system without the hassles of liquid oxygen (LOX).

Enter the Ultrafill home oxygen’s high capacity 3000 PSI cylinder and what we have here is a game changer!  While other cylinders standard capacity of 2000 PSI is an industry standard, Respironics did a one up and bumped their Ultrafill’s capacity to fill a cylinder to 3000 PSI.  You cannot just fill a standard 2000 PSI cylinder and valve to 3000 PSI, the units are specifically designed for the Ultrafill.  What does and extra 1000 PSI get you?  How about 40 % more oxygen than a comparable 2000 PSI cylinder.   For an M6 cylinder which would last about 5.5 hours to an M6 cylinder that would last about 8.7 hours.  Considering studies have shown the average trip outside the home on portable oxygen  is only about 4 hours,  a single 3000 PSI cylinder would provider more than twice the average!

No word yet whether Invacare or other home oxygen system manufacturers will be re-tooling their homefill systems to keep up with the Ultrafill’s high capacity 3000 PSI cylinders, but that may be something we see in the future.

Respironics ultraFillSo how does the rest of the Ultrafill look?  We’ll they have paired the Ultrafill with the Everflo oxygen concentrator, which makes for quit a combination.  I guess the only grip you could levy against the Respironics entry into home oxygen filling is the fact that the units fit side by side, rather than one on top of the other.  So, you’ll lose a little floor space, but you’ll gain duration.  Not a bad trade off.  The Ultrafill is quiet as is the Everflo concentrator, and if it is not quiet enough you can always order your with the Everflo Q which is even more quiet.  Power consumption is lower compared to the other units and if you combined Repironics home oxygen system with the Respironics EverGo portable oxygen concentrator you’ve just won the triple crown of oxygen independence!

Look for a side by side comparison of home oxygen systems in the near future!

I am a Veteran, and get my oxygen supplies through the VA–however, i may want to purchase some of the MD22, 20.1″ Height refillable bottles. I saw an advertisement for four bottles–one of each size for $300.00; and would like to know if I can buy four of the MD22, 20.1″ for $300.00 with free shipping.

If so, what kind of warranty are on the tanks, or can you exchange them, if start leaking, etc.

Thanks
Mike Furman

You say that you can ship anything to India. I would like a Phillips Ultrafill Millenium model (10 lpm) alongwith compressors and cylinder. You will need to ship it to Hyderabad. How much will this work out to? WIll the company guarantee be valid in India?
